Walking around “Ladadika”…
From the middle of 19th century until the decate of 70s, in Mytilene, the capital of Lesvos island, the area around the port, served as the center of distribution and trade of olive oil, which was and still is, the main product of the island.
In and around the port, there were commercial enterprises, consulates, banks, olive oil offices, workers ‘and porters’ unions, dark oil shops, carpenters, shipping offices…
That’s why the area was called “Ladadika”.
The good quality of the product and the organization of its distribution, made the lesvian olive oil go beyond the narrow borders of an island and a country and became known all over the world.
Today the area of “Ladadika” has changed its “character”.
The old warehouses, the olive oil shops, the old banks, have become cafes, bars, ” kafenia” (traditional restaurants)…
So come and join us to walk this corner of the city, to see, to meet, to listen to the sounds and whispers of another era, which brought economic and social prosperity to the island.
